A magnetic field sensor device for scanning a magnetic gear rack is described which has at least one sensor, in particular a magnetoresistor, which is sensitive to magnetic fields and is held on a carrier. The carrier is constructed as concentrator which concentrates the magnetic field, and has, separated from at least one sensor, at least one modulator, which has a larger surface area than the sensor surface area and has magnetically active zones and inactive zones which alternate with one another in the scanning direction and face the material measure to be scanned. This permits contactless, wear-free scanning which can be reproduced with high accuracy.
