In a laser welding method, materials covered with a coating of lower melting point than the base material like Zn-coated steel are stacked one over the other, with a spacer between them providing a predetermined continuous air gap. The assembly with a clamp is conected to cylinders maintaining it together. The welding operation is carried out by application of a laser beam to the plates, the Zn vapour of the coatings flowing into the air gap. As the beam moves on, the hole formed by it is filled with molten metal. Coating material can also be oil or paint and the air gap is in the range 0.1-0.5 mm. |
