The invention relates to a hand-held apparatus for surface working, which contains a drive motor (3) arranged in an apparatus housing (2). A gear housing (8) is arranged on the latter so as to project laterally. In the gear housing there extends a drive train (17) which connects the motor shaft (5) of the drive motor (3) and tool shaft (9), in order to transmit rotary movement. The tool shaft (9) is mounted on the gear housing parallel to and at a distance from the motor shaft (5) and serves to secure a working tool (15) which rotates in operation. <IMAGE>
