<p>A television programme interrupted by non-programme material, such as commercials, is broadcast free-to-air, by cable or other means, in a format which can be received and viewed using conventional television equipment (2, 3). A second indicating signal is also transmitted, this signal identifying the type of programme currently being broadcast on each of a number of channels. The indicating signal is encrypted to prevent fraudulent use. As well as means for receiving the television programme signal, the viewer is equipped with means for receiving the indicating signal and editing viewing and/or recording of programmes according to the content of the indicating signal. Editing is enabled only while credit remains in a credit store (9). Credit is established by payment by the user to a central office, which transmits a credit signal, addressed to the appropriate user. Credit is consumed according to usage of the invention.</p> |
