The invention relates to a mechanical motor-vehicle gearbox with an input shaft (2), an intermediate shaft (4) and an output shaft (3), in particular a layshaft gearbox (1). The object of the invention is to provide a motor-vehicle gearbox of the stated type which guarantees effective prevention of rattling and other noises in the gearbox, these noises generally arising in a particular resonant range of rotation when the engine is stopped or started without a gear engaged and without the clutch pedal depressed owing to backlash and manufacturing tolerances. The object is achieved by virtue of the fact that a braking device (33, 34) is in effective connection with one of the shafts (4) during the starting and stopping of the engine of the motor vehicle. The operation of the braking device can be accomplished by means of a pulling magnet (13), the brief energisation of which is controlled electronically and as a function of engine speed. <IMAGE>
