To prepare (+)-isocitric acid and its derivatives, maleic acid and/or fumaric acid and/or their derivatives are added to haloacetic acid and its derivatives at high temperature under the action of photomechanical energy and the halogen group is then replaced by a hydroxyl group. The photomechanical energy is UV light with a wavelength of approximately 200 to 300 nm.
