In the case of known barrier fences, two metallic conductor track strips which are parallel and at a distance from one another are continuously connected to a low-impedance, low-voltage source, so that, as a result of their slow reaction and the long-term excitation applied to them, slugs and snails which creep over them cannot become free and are killed. The invention avoids the disadvantage occurring in this case that the slugs and snails which stick to the fence emit secretion and thus form a low-impedance electrical short, the metallic conductor tracks being electrolytically decomposed and destroyed. In order to keep the electrolytic decomposition of the conductor tracks of the barrier fence as low as possible and thus to make its service life as long as possible, the conductor tracks (7, 8) of the barrier fence have a pulsed voltage applied to them at a pulse repetition frequency and duty ratio which are so low that the excitation applied to the slugs and snails has no paralysing effect, allowing them time to move back, and does not lead to excessively large emission of secretion.
