A coin selector has an input opening means including two walls (7, 8), one of which (8) is pivotally mounted (9). The walls converge and rest against each other in a closed position. insertion of a coin (11) between the walls forces the walls apart whereafter they close again after the coin has passed. Two photodiodes (13) are provided facing each other. An arm (15) is fixed to the pivotable wall (8) and extends between the photodiodes. The arm has an aperture (16) in alignment with the photodiodes when the walls are in the closed position. The arm interrupts the beam when the pivotable wall pivots away from the other wall. The selector has electronic means which is activated each time the aperture of the arm is aligned with the photodiodes following interruption of the beam by the arm. If a wire (12) is attached to the coin, this will maintain the arm (15) in a position in which the beam is interrupted and the electronic means will not be activated. <IMAGE>
