Liq. crystal display elements comprises a pair of substrates provided with electrodes and nematic liq. crystal layer exhibiting positive dielectric constant anisotropy and contg. optically active substance. Liq. crystal molecule orientation is twisted in the 200-250 deg. range from one substrate surface to the other to form a helical structure. A polyimide orientation film is provided between the electrode and liq. crystal layer and is made of polyimide prepd. by reacting diamine cpd. having a long chain hydrocarbon gp. or a CF3 gp. with tetracarboxylic dianhydride, causing a pretilt angle of at least 3 deg. relative to the liq. crystal molecules. |
