The invention relates to a growing medium which can be used for out-of-soil growing, including a flexible envelope produced from an impervious material, through which the roots cannot pass, with a lower sheet 3 and an upper sheet 4 which can be pierced for the insertion of root balls to be grown. The two sheets enclose a substrate 6 essentially composed of superabsorbent particles. The medium is characterised in that a porous sheet 8 produced from a moisture-resistant material and through which the roots can pass is arranged between the said substrate and the said upper sheet. The sheet particularly has the object of providing better holding (support) of the root ball in the medium. Application in particular to growing tomatoes. <IMAGE>
