Weft storage drum for jet looms, has retractable control pin located in conical drum section about which weft turns are wound by a rotary guide, the conical section, a cylindrical weft takeoff section. The control pin is retracted at the start of picking, and can be returned to operative position instantly, that is because weft turns slide the conical section as soon as the pin retracts, with both radial and axial movement with respect to the drum. The pin is retracted and returned by a rock lever pivoted by a cam, the lever having a cam- engaging follower urged towards the can by a spring. The weft turns of the storage drum are not abruptly excessively slacked for picking.
