An improved method for oxidizing the organic carbon substances in the caustic aluminate liquor of the Bayer process under the influence of metal catalyst ions, whereby there is no net build-up of sodium oxalate or benzene carboxylates in the oxidized liquor. The method comprises the steps of heating the liquor to a temperature of 270-280 DEG C; supplying, in an oxygen-containing gas, no more than the stoichiometric amount of oxygen necessary for the conversion of the organic carbon content of the liquor to inorganic carbon; rapidly oxidizing the low molecular weight organic substances present in the liquor, such as sodium acetate, thereby effecting a rapid rise in temperature into the range 290-320 DEG C; holding the liquor under agitation within the temperature range 290 DEG -320 DEG C until an organic oxidation efficiency not exceeding 95% is achieved; rapidly cooling the oxidized liquor to conditions of atmospheric pressure at a temperature of approximately 95 DEG C and recovering the metal catalyst ions along with precipitated aluminum hydroxide. The improved method has particular relevance to processes uaing a tube reactor and copper or a transition metal as the source of metal catalyst ions.
|
