The invention relates to a method and device for mechanically stacking planks of wood so as to constitute packages of fixed dimensions consisting, during the depositing of a layer of planks 1 by means of the withdrawal of a transfer fork 2 in line with a lower layer 1a, in bringing the layer 1a onto previously arranged pins or battens (cleats) 4 by pivoting of the two catches or stops 6 which can be moved or immobilised at any point of their path and which are each integral with a jack 7 so as to obtain the pivoting of at least one plank creating a gap 9, the said gap 9 between two layers 1, 1a being alternate and offset. <IMAGE>
