<p>A sustaining device is disclosed for prolonging the vibration of a string of a stringed musical instrument, such as an electrical guitar having a magnetic pickup (392) responsive to a change in the magnetic field caused by vibration of the string (16). The sustaining device includes a magnetic string driver (394) disposed in magnetic proximity to the pickup (392). An amplifier (396) is coupled between the pickup (392) and the driver (394) for amplifying current from the pickup (392) to the driver (394) to impart sufficient magnetic drive energy to the driver (394) to produce sustained vibration of the string (16). An unbalancing device (398) is provided for creating a magnetic imbalance betwen the pickup (392) and the driver (394) to minimize direct magnetic feedback between the pickup (392) and the driver (394). This unbalancing device can take the form of an unbalanced pickup (392), an unbalanced driver (394), or a shunt plate (398) disposed between the pickup (392) and the driver (394).</p> |
