A device for adjusting the timing angle of at least one cylinder of an internal combustion engine by means of a controller which controls the peak pressure in the combustion chamber in relation to the crank angle can be used in a process to optimize the timing angle in order to maximize the pressure in the combustion chamber. The control parameters can be finely adjusted in function of the ratio of the change in peak pressure to the change in the timing angle. The device also comprises a microprocessor in which an adaptive characteristic diagram for the reference values of the peak pressure is stored.
