MECHANICAL COUPLING FOR TAPE

The coupling (50) for connecting an arresting pendant (12) and the woven tape (14) utilized in an aircraft arresting system consists of an elongated hollow body (52) having at least one open end and a longitudinal slot (54) which extends into its hollow interior. A mounting bracket (56) for connection of the coupling (50) to the arresting system pendant is attached to the side of the coupling body (52) which is opposite from the slot (54). The tape (14) from the arresting system is wrapped between and around a plurality of clamping bars (58,60) and is then inserted through an open end of the coupling body (52) with the connected end of the tape (14) extending through the longitudinal slot (54). The clamping bars (58,60) are sized and shaped to substantially fill the interior of the coupling body (52) and to grip to the tape (14) which is wrapped then around.
