The invention relates to a method of preventing the formation of lead dust during the manufacture and assembly of electrode plates of lead-acid batteries. It is proposed that the plates should be impregnated, preferably with a sodium hydrogencarbonate solution, prior to drying. This achieves not only an immobilisation of lead dust on the surface of the plates but also a marked improvement of certain performance data of the battery.
