The generator has an excitation machine mounted on the same drive shaft as the claw pole rotor carrying the excitation winding. The excitation machine has a stationary dc excitation winding and a generator winding on the excitation machine's rotor. The generator winding is connected via a rectifier to the claw pole rotor's excitation winding. The excitation machine is designed as a d.c. blocking oscillator in which the stationary d.c. excitation winding (17) is connected via a clocked switch (22) to a d.c. source (21). The rotating generator winding (18) is connected via the rectifier (19,20) in the blocking oscillator circuit to the excitation winding (14) of the claw pole rotor (13) and to a parallel buffer capacitor (23).
