Polymer compositions which are convertible by conventional fiber forming methods into absorbent fibers with a high capacity for absorbing brine and which are also stable at room temperature and possess excellent shelf life in uncured form are obtained by reacting: (a) 100 parts dry weight of an aqueous composition of a polymer containing carboxy groups and which has been partially neutralized, with (b) from about 0.1 to about 10 parts of a water-soluble compound containing one amine group and at least one hydroxyl group.
