A water-in-oil emulsion explosive compn. comprises a continuous phase consisting of a carbonaceous fuel and an emulsifier, a dispersed phase consisting of an aqs. soln. of an inorganic oxidiser salt, and expanded perlite having a density of less than 0.60 g/c.c. The fuel is pref. diesel oil, paraffin, an olefin, aromatic or naphthemic hydrocarbon, gas oil, heavy oil or lubricant. The emulsifier is a fatty acid ester of sorbitan, a mono- or di-glyceride of a fatty acid, polyglycol ether, an oxazoline or imidazoline derivative, or alkali metal as alkaline earth metal fatty acid salt or a salt of a hydrocarbyl-substd. carboxylic acid or anhydride, e.g. polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride. The continuous oil phase forms 1-10 wt.% of the compsn. The oxidiser salt is NH4NO3, or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal mixrate, chlorate or perehearate. The disperse phase comprises 46-95% salt and 6-20% water. The perlite has density 0.23-0.45 g/c.c. and form 0.5-3% of the compsn. The compsn. can also contain entrained gas bubbles, chemical gassing agent, phenol- or when-formaldehyde resin hollow microspheres, hollow glass microspheres or polystyrene foam beads.
