The damper comprises means (11, 12, 13, 14, 17) for controlling a flow rate of the damping liquid between one of the chambers (9) and an external reservoir (8). The liquid passes through a first passage (2, 2') providing a linear increase in pressure in the chamber (9) as a function of the speed of the piston. A computer selectively controls the opening of a second passage (3, 3') to provide a linear increase in pressure, of a shallower slope, above a certain pressure given by the computer, prevailing in the chamber (9). The computer then excites an actuator (17) which causes the opening of the passage (3, 3') by means of a distributor (12) and of a coupling (13, 14). Application to a damper setting up a double slope damping law. <IMAGE>
