<p>A yarn transfer arrangement in a yarn winding machine (10) comprises two part-circular guide plates (28,29)which, when an empty tube (17) has moved to the winding position, move from a non-operating position, spaced apart on opposed sides of the winding position of the machine (10) by a distance greater than the diameter of a full package (15), to an operating position in which the plates (28,29) surround the empty tube (17) apart from an entry aperture (30) and an exit aperture (31) allowing the yarn (14) to travel to and from the empty tube (17). One guide plate (28) causes the yarn (14) to have sufficient wrap around the empty tube (17) that, on operation of a cutter (32) disposed on the other guide plate adjacent the exit aperture (31), the cut yarn (14) end is entrained around the empty tube (17) between it and the other guide plate (29), and winding of a package (15) on the empty tube (17) is thereby initiated.
