<p>An intermediate frequency transversal equalizer (92), for use in a QAM demodulator, is described. The tap weights of the equalizer are updated in response to the demodulated signal and to pseudo - error signals, which the demodulator generates. If the locally generated carrier is not synchronised with the incoming signal, only those signals which fall into particular regions of the phase plane are used to update the tap weights. In this way, the equalizer can continue to function correctly even when the demodulator is not synchronised. <IMAGE></p> |
