The spacer consists of a matrix of ferrules (20) defining the spacing pitch of the fuel rods. The ferrules (20) comprise stops against which the fuel rods are biased by springs (44). The springs are loop springs (44) positioned between two ferrules in corresponding cut-outs (60). Tabs are integrally formed on the springs so as to project into the interstitial space (82) between the ferrules (20).
