A derivative of a glycolipid containing a sialic acid of general formula (I), a process for the production thereof, and a particulate carrier containing the derivative as the constituent. In formula (I), the symbol @ represents either an alpha or beta linkage; R<1> represents hydrogen or acetyl; R<2> represents hydrogen, C1 to C4 lower alkyl or alkali metal ion; X represents oxygen, sulfur, or a residue represented by the following formula (II) or (III): -O(CH2)mNHCO- (II), wherein m is an integer of 1 to 10, -O(CH2)mCONH- (III) and Y represents a group of formula (IV); wherein A represents a C10 to C40 linear or branched acylamino or the like, B represents hydrogen, carboxyl or a group of formula (V), and n and n' are each an integer of 0 to 3.
