Device for automatic determination and display of the distance (h) of the tool (6) of a works machine (1) with respect to a reference plane (P) traced by a rotary laser emission (31). Sensors (24A, 24B, 24C) measure the displacement of the rod of each actuator jack (22, 18, 13), while a target (reticule, graticule) (30) measures the position of the axis (5) of articulation of the arm (4) with respect to the laser beam (31).
