A process for producing diacetal such as 1,3:2,4-di(ester- or carbamoyl-substituted benzylidene)sorbitol by the condensation of a dialkyl acetal represented by general formula (III), with a polyhydric alcohol such as sorbitol, wherein Q represents -COOR<1>, -COOR<2>, -CONR<3>R<3a> or -CONR<4>R<4a>, and R<5> represents lower alkyl.
