<p>An exercise machine including a base (12, 14, 16) for supporting the apparatus above the underlying surface and a seat (10) for supporting the user's body is disclosed. Structures which permit the seat to be smoothly raised and lowered in relation to the base are also provided. A pair of grips (37), mounted on a handlebar (36), are positioned forward of the seat (10) and are configured to be grasped by the user. A pair of pedals (30), each of the pedals positioned forward of the seat (10) and each configured to rest the foot of the user upon, are also included. Structures are provided which permit the grips (37) and pedals (30) to move in a back-and-forth reciprocating fashion are also included. A mechanical linkage (20, 41) for transferring the reciprocating movement of the pair of grips and the pair of pedals to the seat is provided such that as the user moves the pair of grips and the pair of pedals in a reciprocating fashion, the seat (10) is raised and lowered in proportion to the movement. Thus, as the user pulls with his arms and pushes with his legs, he raises his body which, as carried out repeatedly, results in a muscle and cardiovascular conditioning exercise.</p> |
