PURPOSE:To facilitate medium constitution and to attain overwriting by a single laser beam and single bias magnetic field with good reliability. CONSTITUTION:The magneto-optical recording medium is constituted by laminating a ferromagnetic film 3 which exhibits perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a diaferromagnetic film 4 which exhibits a ferromagnetic phase by generating a magnetic phase transition at about the Curie temp. of this ferromagnetic film 3 on a base 1. Such magneto-optical recording medium is used and is irradiated with a laser beam of a high power, by which the medium is heated to the temp. above the magnetic phase transition temp. or above. Recording is then executed by applying a bias magnetic field of specified intensity to the medium. The medium is irradiated with the laser beam of a low power, by which the medium is heated up to the temp. lower than the magnetic phase transition temp. Erasing is then executed by applying the same bias magnetic field as the above-mentioned bias magnetic field to the medium. The recorded information is reproduced by irradiating the medium with the laser beam of the power smaller than the power used at the time of erasing.
