A security document such as a bank note or identity card having a flat security element (2), suitable for both visual and machine authenticity checking, comprises a multilayer electroluminescent safeguarding thread that has a luminescent effect in predefined wave ranges. The threads may be formed from a substrate (3) coated with metal (4) onto which is printed alternate strips of heatsealable ink (5) and electroluminescent ink (6). A second film (30) coated with metal (40) is covered in heat-sealable ink (5) and laminated onto the first film. For identity cards, an all-over electroluminescent layer may be used.
