<p>This invention discloses a magnetic recording medium using a metal magnetic thin film as a magnetic layer. An oxide layer is formed on the surface of the metal magnetic thin film, and a protective layer is formed further on this oxide layer. The thickness of the oxyde layer on the metal magnetic thin film is 20 to 230 Å, the thickness of the protective layer is 20 to 230 Å, and the total thickness of the oxide layer and the protective layer is 40 to 250 Å. Before the protective layer is formed, the surface may be bombarded to improve adhesion of the protective layer. A lubricant can be applied on the surface of the protective layer, as well. Examples of the lubricants are carboxylic acid/perfluoroalkyl esters, ester compounds such as perfluoropolyethers containing a carboxy group, and amine salt compounds. On the other hand, the back of a non-magnetic support as a substrate has a mean coarseness Ra at the center line and protrusions having a maximum height Rmax which satisfy the following relation: 0.0015 νm « Ra « 0.0070 νm, 0.015 « Rmax « 0.070 νm.</p> |
