Poly-1-(3-sulphopropyl)-3,4- dimethylene-pyrrolidinium betaines of formula (I) are new. Where, R = H, 1-22C alkyl or alkylcarbamoylmethyl; M = a cation; n = the degree of polymerisation. (I) are prepd. by reacting a triallylammonium salt of formula (II) with 1-1.5 molar equivs. of a metal bisulphite (esp. NaHSO3) in an aq. medium of pH 5-10 under oxidising conditions, pref. provided by aeration. Where X = an anion, pref. Cl or Br. USE - (I) are useful in enhanced oil recovery operations as water or brine viscosifiers or as sacrificial agents in surfactant flooding.
