A process for the preparation of a ceramic material comprising a) reacting at least one organochlorosilane of the formula <IMAGE> (I) in which R1 is Cl, H, C1 to C4-alkyl or phenyl, optionally together with at least one organochlorosilane of the formula <IMAGE> (II) in which R2 is Cl, C1 to C4-alkyl, vinyl or phenyl, with ammonia in an inert solvent to form a product of ammonolysis, b) polymerizing the product of ammonolysis in an inert solvent in the presence of a basic catalyst of the formula R3R4R5R6N+A-(III) in which R3, R4, R5 and R6 each independently is an organic radical containing 1 to 24 carbon atoms, and A is a basic anion which is capable of causing deprotonation, thereby to form an organic silazane polymer, c) rendering the catalyst inactive at a temperature above its decomposition temperature, and d) sintering the silazane polymer.
