The invention relates to a process for preparing an imidazo[1,5-a]quinoxaline-1,3-dione derivative of the formula I, <IMAGE> in which R1 and R4 denote hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy, X is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl, amino or mono- or dialkylamino, W is an optionally substituted phenyl, thienyl or pyridyl group, and R2 and R3 denote hydrogen or various substituents as defined in the patent claims, and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts. These compounds are extremely selective brain GABAa receptor agonists, antagonists or invert agonists or their precursors and they can be used for diagnosing and treating anxiety, sleep disturbances and disease attacks, overdosing with drugs of the benzodiazepine type and for improving the memory.
