Process for the preparation of 3- or 5-fluoroaromatic compounds.

A process for the preparation of a 3- or 5-fluoroaromatic compound by reacting an aromatic compound which contains an electron-withdrawing group in the 1-position and electron-donating groups in the 2- and 4-positions with from 1% to 50% fluorine in an inert gas. The process offers a convenient synthetic route to fluoro compounds which have substitution pattern which are difficult to obtain by other routes. The derived fluoroaromatic compounds are useful as intermediates in the manufacture of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and dyestuffs.
