An apparatus is provided for controlling an industrial robot (2) of the type which holds a workpiece (W) for movement relative to a fixed tool (7) or a series of fixed tools. The robot control apparatus (2) prepares and stores a task program which itself includes teaching data regarding the positional and attitudinal relation wXtj of the tool tip (Eo) relative to the workpiece reference point (Wo) as well as the setting data regarding the tool (7) and the workpiece (W).
