A video recording or reproducing system such as a VCR or camcorder is provided with an indexing system for recorded programs. Identification codes (ID) for individual recorded programs are recorded in the vertical blanking periods for the recorded video signals, which are detected by a decoder (50). The codes are stored in a memory (50) and programs can be selected from a video tape from an on-screen display of the memory contents for a particular tape.
