A new procedure for thermally disposing of refuse which contains asbestos has the novel feature that the refuse is filled into containers before being placed in the furnace, the containers are sealed, and the containers and refuse are then both fed into the furnace. Also claimed is a container for use in the procedure, consisting of a section of pipe made from a metal sheet which is rolled, folded longitudinally and then elongated to the required length. Pref. other required substances may be placed in the furnace with the containers, and the furnace is preferably blast furnace or cupola. A process such as melting of metals may be carried out in the furnace at the same time. Pref. before being placed in the containers, the refuse is preferably dried and chopped to a particle size of less than 10 mm. The chopping is performed in an enclosed machine. USE/ADVANTAGE - For disposing of waste material which contains asbestos, such as old insulating materials etc. Asbestos contamination of the disposal apparatus and the surrounding environment, by the spread of dust or by any other means, is avoided.
