Automotive catalytic converter has an outer housing (1) surrounding a layer of heat insulation (2). The novelty is that the heat insulation layer is formed in whole or part of a latent heat storage medium (3). The latent heat storage medium (3) is one which changes phase over a given temp. range and is positioned between the catalytic converter housing (1) and the surrounding storage medium housing (4). USE/ADVANTAGE - The latent heat storage medium releases heat. The catalytic converter reaches its effective operating temperature more quickly.
