PROCESS FOR ISOLATING CELLULOSE NITRATE FROM NON-GRAPHITED MONOBASIC PROPELLANT POWDERS

The novel process makes it possible to isolate cellulose nitrate contained in powdered propellant by precipitation from an acetonic propellant powder solution in a precipitating agent capable of dissolving the attendant materials, followed by washing the precipitation product with the precipitating agent, said cellulose nitrate being suitable as a raw material for the production of collodium wool, pyrotechnic products, explosives and propellants, and to produce collodium wool from this cellulose nitrate with outstanding dissolving properties by dissolving it in acetone, bleaching it at low temperature, precipitating it in water and then introducing the high-volume, damp precipitation product into a nitrating acid and ''renitrating'' while maintaining the viscosity. The waste products from the process can be ecologically acceptably disposed of by biological means. The process is usable in the disposal of non-graphited monobasic powdered propellants and the recovery of cellulose nitrate and the production of collodium wool from such a powdered propellant.
