The gearbox is partic. for a rotary mill with vertical axis, having a main gear train with housing and driving pinion, and an initial one with two intermeshing spur gears on parallel shafts. The initial gear-train (9) is interchangeable, its housing being split. The top half (7a) accommodates one gear shaft (10) in bearings, the shaft being coupled via a sliding sleeve (15) to the driving or intermediate shaft (8). A detachable cover (16) is mounted on the top half near the sleeve. The other gear shaft (11) works in bearings (17) in the bottom housing half (7b), being coupled to the driving pinion (5) of the main gear train (3) via a sliding seat (18) and socket (19).
