The light barrier device uses a number of spaced light beams lying in a common plane, acting as individual light barriers extending across the access. A respective electro-optical transmitter and opto-electrical receiver are provided for each light beam contained in a housing (40) mounted on the outside of the lift and coupled via optical fibres to lenses at each end of each light barrier. The optical fibres are coupled to rails on opposite sides of the door incorporating aligned light exit openings coupled to the optical fibre end via a deflection mirror and a respective lens.
