Printing apparatus for printing on a web of sheet material comprising a printing head, feeding means for moving the printing head and a web of sheet material to be printed upon relative to one another while printing, a donor web bearing a transfer ink, the web lying adjacent the strip of sheet material while printing and movable by the feeding means with the strip of sheet material relative to the printing head to transfer ink in a printed pattern onto the web of sheet material, and feed detection means connected with one of the webs for detecting a fault in the movement of the webs relative to the printing head while printing.
