The invention relates to a slide drive, operated by a linear motor, for a belt-grinding machine. The aim is to create an effective economical linear-motor slide drive with acceptable space requirement for higher working loads of the slide, as well. This is achieved by a force member (24) which exerts, counter to the external working load of the slide (13), in the operative direction of the linear motor, a counterforce Fg on the slide and thereby reduces the effective external slide load. The linear motor thus needs to be dimensioned only for this reduced load and can be operated with less power and designed smaller. <IMAGE>
