A machine for comminuting large awkwardly shaped pieces of waste has a main comminuting unit (10) and a preliminary comminuting unit (12) arranged above the latter. The preliminary comminuting unit (12) has a preliminary comminuting rotor (18) which interacts with preliminary comminuting counter tools (38, 40) which are fixed to the casing. The preliminary comminuting rotor (18) also supports a conveying spiral (26) which delivers the pieces of waste which have been subjected to preliminary comminution via the charging aperture (50) of the main comminuting unit (10). The latter has two comminuting rollers (54L, 54R) which run in opposite directions and interact with a fixed twin counter tool (62). The top of the counter tool (62) supports a narrow deflector body (94) which is guided up to the vicinity of the charging aperture (50). <IMAGE>
