<PICT:0438124/III/1> Phenols are recovered from industrial waste liquors, such as ammoniacal liquor, by subjecting the liquor to a rectifying distillation, condensing the resulting vapours to form an aqueous liquid and recovering the phenols therefrom. The vapours evolved from a column 1, to which liquor is supplied through a heat-exchanger 2 and heated therein by a coil 4, are cooled in a condenser 6, part of the condensate obtained being refluxed to the column at 7 and part further cooled in a condenser 8 and collected in a container 9 wherein the phenol is separated. Some of the phenol separates in the container 9 as an oil; the remaining aqueous distillate may be extracted for dissolved phenol or returned to the column at 15. The distillation may be carried out in the presence of carbon dioxide.
