A process for preparing the compound of formula (I) which comprises treating a compound of formula (II) wherein R<2> is hydrogen, CN or CO2R<1> and R<1> is hydrogen or (C1-C6)alkyl with a reducing agent with the proviso that when R<2> is CN or CO2R<1> and R<1> is (C1-C6)alkyl the product of the reduction is heated with an acid. Compounds of formula (II) wherein R<2> is CN or CO2R<1> and R<1> is (C1-C6)alkyl or R<2> is hydrogen and R<1> is (C1-C6)alkyl or hydrogen. The compound of formula (VII) wherein R<1> is (C1-C6)alkyl.
