The invention relates to a method for operating, with low power loss, a relay forming an immobiliser in a motor vehicle, in which method the relay is driven by a microcontroller located in the motor vehicle in order to deactivate the immobiliser, and as a result power is supplied to a load necessary for activating the means which bring about the operational capability. The invention also relates to a circuit arrangement for realising the method. In order to keep the power loss of a load located in the motor vehicle as low as possible, after the deactivation of the immobiliser the microcontroller drives the relay within a limited time period so that the load can be connected to the power supply in this time period.
