Process for the preparation of calcium carbide by reacting a carbon component from waste synthetic matter with calcium oxide in an electric arc furnace, by: a) thermal decomposition at 500 to 1300 DEG C, b) consecutive formation of carbon black and/or precipitations of the carbon formed during the separation of the decomposition gases in Stage a) over granular coke at 800 to 1500 DEG C, and c) separation of the finely divided carbon black particles and/or of the coke particles coated with carbon from the exhaust gases produced. This process makes it possible to make use of virtually all waste synthetic matter in an ecological way and simultaneously to obtain particularly inexpensive carbon components as well as the current necessary for this process.
