An appliance for transporting and opening bales of plant material has a frame which can be received by the tractor hydraulics, with a stationary projecting arm standing obliquely upwards and with a guide arm of an opening device, the said guide arm being adjustable relative to the projecting arm, a clamping fork fastened to the guide arm and having rotatably mounted clamping plates, and a clamping cylinder. The direction of the longitudinal axis of the guide arm is exactly parallel to the connecting line between the centre points of the maximum and minimum diameters of the bales when the bale in each case bears on the opening drum.
